Objectives: Students will be able to: discuss, list, or define: 1. THE NORMAL PLATELET - cell of origin, - lifespan, - simplified structural model - simple model of adhesion and aggregation - role in hemostasis 2. THROMBOCYTOPENIA a) that thrombocytopenia may be caused by underproduction or excessive destruction of platelets and the use of marrow examination to draw this distinction, b) common causes of a low platelet count due to increased loss or consumption: - Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), acute and chronic, - drug induced (eg. heparin, thiazides), and - Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, c) an example of marrow failure as a cause of decreased production, d) at what levels thrombocytopenia causes bleeding, e) indications for platelet transfusion, and f) standard treatment for immune thrombocytopenia. 3. THROMBOCYTOSIS a) causes as primary or secondary, and an example of each, b) potential complications of thrombocytosis, and c) treatment of thrombocytosis.
