Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

CLL is the commonest form of leukemia usually affecting patients over 60. It is characterized in its early stages, by an increase in the number of mature looking lymphocytes in the blood smear, which are monoclonal when subjected to laboratory testing. CLL usually progresses very slowly with the eventual development of lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly and bone marrow failure. Recent clinical trials point to marked improvement in outcome for patients with advanced CLL.
