Thrombocytopenia

Students will be able to state/discuss: a) that thrombocytopenia may be caused by underproduction or excessive destruction of platelets. b) common causes of a low platelet count due to increased loss or consumption: - immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), acute and chronic, - drug induced (eg. heparin, thiazides), and - disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) c) an example of marrow failure as a cause of decreased production, d) at what levels thrombocytopenia causes bleeding, e) indications for platelet transfusion, and f) standard treatment for immune thrombocytopenia.
